In Line Adapter

There are many uses for an adapter in today's world. An adapter is a versatile device that takes on many forms, shapes and sizes to fulfill its basic requirement, 'adapting' a device to function in a new or different manner. Some adapters are meant to convert the specifications of one device so that it can be compatible with another one. Adapters can also be used as a mere connecting device, between two systems with different plugs or connecters. They can be used to join two similar cables as well, to obtain a longer cable.

What is an In Line Adapter?

Most adapters are small, inexpensive devices that can provide an easy solution to many common issues faced with equipment and appliances around the house. An in line adapter is no different from the functioning of a basic adapter. The in line functionality merely suggests that the adapter is allowing or permitting the passage of the material in question through the device to which it is connected, in series with the line. Depending on its function, an in line adapter may allow the passage of power, an RF signal, or a material substance such as fuel, water or paint.

Applications of an In Line Adapter

An in line adapter can be put to various uses in day-to-day life as well as for industrial or commercial purposes. Let's take a look at few of the varied applications of such a device.

  • Electrical In Line Adapters: The standards maintained for power sockets or points are different in different countries. In order to be able to use devices and appliances while traveling, an electrical adapter that fits into the power socket standard of that country, and allows for the device to be plugged in to its other end, could be carried along
  • USB In Line Adapters: Similar to the previous type, this one allows travelers to charge their devices such as iPhones, MP3 players and so on, to a power source. The adapter comes with USB ports and connects to a power source, thereby eliminating the need for a computer.
  • Coupler Adapters: These are very simple devices that are used to create a longer length of cable. In the event that a given cable for a device, such as a coaxial cable, is too short for the intended purpose, two such cables can be joined together using a coupler adapter. This type of adapter comes with female inputs on both ends, allowing the cables to be joined very easily.
  • In Line Barrel Adapter: In paintball, sometimes a barrel is used to improve the efficiency and target of the gun. However, all barrels do not come with the same threading. To attach a barrel to a gun that have different types of threading, an in line barrel adapter is used.

These are a just a few of the applications that can be derived out of in line adapters. These devices can be purchased anywhere from local hardware stores, electronic retail outlets, electrical stores on even on the internet. Many websites such as Radioshack and Costco stock such products that can be purchased online.
