Line Level Adapter

An adapter is a type of device that makes allowance for a connection between incompatible devices. Given this description, it is possible to imagine a multitude of applications for a device such as an adapter. Adapters can be used for connecting devices to incompatible power sources, giving additional features to existing devices, and adding or installing new devices to existing ones, in order to enjoy more functions at a lower cost. There are many different types of adapters and a line level adapter is one of them.

What is a Line Level Adapter?

If you have a stereo with speakers that you are not satisfied with, there is really no need to go and purchase a whole new stereo or sound system. A much cheaper solution is fortunately available. It is possible to add new speakers and an amplifier to that stereo. It's easy to purchase an amplifier and new speakers, but connecting the amplifier to the base stereo unit is not as easy as it sounds. The problem being that most amplifiers are designed to accept line inputs that are low-level only, where as all stereos use speaker outputs that are high-level.

Since these two are incompatible, a connection between them is difficult. What can make this job easier, however, is the use of a device known as a line level adapter. The solution to such an issue is to use a line level adapter (also known as a line out converter). Such a device may be purchased in a store, but if you are familiar in working with circuits, you can wire this adapter yourself.

A line level adapter is essentially a simple circuit consisting of two resistors, which work in reducing the output voltage of the head unit from high-level to the appropriate, desired level. To build an adapter of your own, all you need to do is insert the resistors of the correct value in the path of the signal. However, line level adapters are not expensive and can be easily purchased.

Purchasing a Line Level Adapter

Some of the brands of line level adapters that are available today are Scosche, Xantech, Shure, Uxcell, and many more. Before you go about selecting and buying an adapter, pay close attention to the description of these products and any reviews that might be available as well. A few things to keep in mind while looking for a line level adapter are:

  • The size, and material of the adapter.
  • Technical details such as the maximum wattage supported by it.
  • The maximum loss in signal allowed by the adapter.
  • Pricing of the product.
  • Customer reviews and ratings.

These are some of the important things to consider before you purchase a line level adapter. Most of these devices are available in the price range of $10 to $40. Many websites on the internet stock these products along with reviews from the people who have used them. The device may be purchased from local stores as well.
